Bavarian universities are world leaders in artificial intelligence (AI) research and home to many globally outstanding AI researchers. They stand for the fact that for many years now, decisive AI innovations for the knowledge landscape have repeatedly come from Bavaria.
This also has an impact on the courses offered in Bavaria: Universities offer a wide range of international AI degree programs, often with an interdisciplinary design. They provide Bavarian students with a broad understanding of AI and its applications. In addition, they, as well as junior scientists, benefit from an excellent international AI research network that Bavarian universities maintain with the world’s leading AI science institutions.
The high innovative strength of Bavarian universities also shapes Bavaria’s entrepreneurial environment: Many university spin-offs and cooperations with large-scale industry and young AI startups show that research topics from science have high transfer options into application-oriented implementations.
Smart data and human-machine interaction are the strengths of the University of Augsburg. Many interdisciplinary research projects deal with fundamental questions of AI that reach into areas such as production, medicine, teaching, learning in the Swabian region and beyond.
With nine professorships in AI, the topic of artificial intelligence at the University of Bamberg is covered by a wide range of research areas from machine learning to language generation and dialogue systems, image analysis and AI system development to cognitive systems. The core AI topics are supplemented by nine professorships in computer science with strong connections to AI. Application domains of AI research are especially in health, education and industry. Bamberg’s AI research is also characterized by long-established interdisciplinary collaborations with humanities and social sciences.
From the development of efficient algorithms and innovative application models to the competence development of young scientists: With 75 IT-related professorships, the University of Bayreuth links all faculties via AI research and builds bridges between the university and strong partners in Germany. Areas of focus include business informatics, medical data science, adaptive AI systems, and materials analysis.
The focus of the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt is the development of a people-oriented digital society, in particular methods for the automatic analysis of large amounts of data and secure processing of sensitive data.
More than 60 chairs and professorships conduct research on artificial intelligence (AI) at Friedrich Alexander University (FAU) Erlangen-Nuremberg. Their topics range from mathematical foundations, algorithms or data security to medical applications, manufacturing, digital humanities and ethics of AI. In addition, FAU is home to the baiosphere AI hub of health sciences in Bavaria.
At the 18 faculties of the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) Munich, more than 50 female scientists are conducting research on or with the methods of artificial intelligence, ranging from ancient sciences to the origin of the universe.
At the Technical University of Munich (TUM), intelligent systems in the fields of robotics, machine learning and data science are being researched under the guiding principle of “human-centered engineering”, also with a view to responsibility for people and society.
In accordance with its mission statement, the University of the Bundeswehr Munich is concerned with security in technology and society. AI science projects can be found in all faculties and institutions of the university. One focus is AI-assisted detection of conflict and crisis hotspots and IT security in aerospace.
Founded in 2021, the Technical University of Nuremberg (UTN) pursues a consistently interdisciplinary approach that addresses the major societal issues of the future through the interplay of technology, natural sciences, humanities and social sciences. In the area of artificial intelligence, UTN is focusing on robotics.

The University of Passau bundles the professional expertise of its faculties on the topics of digitalization, Europe and sustainability.
With its new Faculty of Computer Science and Data Science, the University of Regensburg has bundled and strategically expanded existing AI competencies, especially in the subject groups Biology, Preclinical Medicine, Computational Biology, Physics, Mathematics. The Knowledge Creates² Data project works across faculties in the areas of Big Data, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.
The Julius Maximilians University (JMU) Würzburg focuses on artificial intelligence (AI) and data science. AI methods are made available to researchers across faculties to enable them to use the largest amounts of data for their respective projects. The lighthouse project is the Center for Artificial Intelligence in Data Science (CAIDAS), which is also the crystallization point for the AI node Data Science in Bavaria.
