Research Landscape Bavaria: Home for AI

Bavarian research is distinguished by its network of 64 universities, colleges and state-funded research institutes, led by the DFG-funded excellence universities TUM and LMU. This scientific ecosystem provides the ideal breeding ground for research into artificial intelligence (AI) in areas such as health, mobility or environmental protection.

European AI Research 2013-2021 [1]

In terms of publication output, the UK, Germany and Switzerland are also top performers in European AI research. Thanks to increased publication output in Germany, especially from Bavaria, Europe has been catching up with the world’s current leading AI research nations, the USA and China, since 2017.

The graphs shown on the right are weighted publications. Their weighting is calculated from the impact factor of the journals in which they are published. [2]

Promotion of AI sciences through the Hightech Agenda Bavaria.

The Bavarian state government is investing more than 5.5 billion euros in the expansion of the research location with the High-Tech Agenda Bavaria. Thanks to these targeted investments and its outstanding research infrastructure, Bavaria has developed a global appeal for highly qualified AI experts. The intensive exchange between research institutions, industry and government are decisive factors for continued success. The Bavarian AI Council, which is committed to sustainable and social AI, among other things, makes a significant contribution to this.
