Classifying AI Systems: Risk Classes, Roles, Duties – 28 September 2026
As part of the Bavarian AI Innovation Accelerator, appliedAI offers free and practical learning paths. The training supports companies, startups, and public institutions in building AI competencies, understanding regulatory requirements of the EU AI Act, and implementing them in a targeted manner.
Learn how to correctly classify AI systems according to the EU AI Act, determine your organization's role along the AI value chain, and derive the resulting obligations.
Based on the fundamentals of the EU AI Act, this training provides a detailed understanding of the four risk classes and their respective classification criteria. You will learn about the various roles along the AI value chain – provider, operator, importer, dealer, and authorized representative – and understand the regulatory obligations that arise for your organization. Using practical examples, you will practice classifying specific AI systems and derive the next steps for development and use.
Learning Objectives
You explain the risk-based approach of the EU AI Act and determine – also with the help of practical guides – the risk class of specific AI systems according to their intended use.
You assign your organization the appropriate role along the AI value chain (provider, operator, importer, authorized representative, dealer).
You analyze the impact of risk classification on the development and use of AI systems and derive specific action recommendations for your organization.
Prerequisites: Participation in the first training of the learning path or a comparable basic understanding of the EU AI Act is beneficial but not a prerequisite.
Trainer: Demian Niemeyer, Senior AI Regulatory Expert, appliedAI Institute for Europe
Target Audience: The training is aimed at compliance officers, product managers, AI developers, and professionals who want to deepen their knowledge of risk classification according to the EU AI Act.
