Munich continues to be one of the leading technology and innovation locations worldwide. This is shown by the current Global Tech Ecosystem Index 2026 of the data provider Dealroom. In a European comparison, the Bavarian capital once again ranks among the top 5 most important tech ecosystems. Worldwide, Munich ranks 24th, ahead of international metropolises such as Tokyo, Hong Kong, or Sydney.
Munich's role as a European deep tech hub is particularly highlighted. The study sees the city as an important location for technology-intensive innovations at the intersection of research, entrepreneurship, and industrial application. Especially in areas such as artificial intelligence, robotics, quantum technologies, and industrial future technologies, companies with international appeal are increasingly emerging here.
The Dealroom Index evaluates 325 technology ecosystems worldwide in 77 countries. It considers, among other things, venture capital investments, company valuations, the emergence of new unicorns, and networking with universities and research institutions.
At the same time, the study makes it clear that global competition continues to be dominated by the USA: Half of the world's 20 strongest technology ecosystems are located there. Europe, on the other hand, scores particularly with innovation-strong and research-related locations. Ten European cities are among the world's leading "Density Leaders", measuring innovation power and value creation in relation to the population.
The results underline the importance of Munich as a central innovation location in Europe and show the growing relevance of Bavaria for the development and application of future technologies.
