Prof. Dr. Fabian Theis was awarded the prestigious Academy Prize by the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences. The Academy recognizes his groundbreaking contributions to computer-based biomedicine and the development of innovative methods for the analysis of biomedical data. The award ceremony took place as part of the Leibniz Day, the Academy's annual festive session in honor of its founder Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz.

Theis is the Head of the Computational Health Center and Director of the Institute of Computational Biology (ICB) at Helmholtz Munich, as well as a Professor of Mathematical Modeling of Biological Systems at the Technical University of Munich (TUM). In addition, he is the chairman of the Bavarian AI Council, the central advisory body of the Bavarian state government on questions of artificial intelligence. With his research at the intersection of biology, medicine, computer science, and biophysics, he is one of the internationally leading scientists in the field of data-driven biomedicine.

Pioneering research for the medicine of the future

In its justification, the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences particularly highlights Theis’ outstanding achievements in developing computer-based methods for the analysis of complex biomedical data. His research combines cutting-edge data science with biological and medical questions, thus creating new opportunities to better understand disease mechanisms.

By developing innovative analysis methods, Theis significantly contributes to enabling new data-based approaches for diagnostics, prevention, and therapy. His work makes an important contribution to making the potential of artificial intelligence and data-driven research usable for healthcare.

The Academy particularly appreciates his ability to combine scientific excellence with interdisciplinary thinking. His research has set international standards and has had a lasting impact on computer-based biomedicine.

Award for outstanding scientific achievements

The Academy Prize of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences is one of the significant scientific honors in the German-speaking area. It is awarded for outstanding research achievements and honors scientists whose innovative and sustainable contributions have significantly advanced their fields.

With this honor, Fabian Theis joins the ranks of outstanding researchers whose work has long-term impacts on the scientific development of their disciplines.

One of the oldest scientific academies in Europe

The Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences traces its origins back to the Electoral Brandenburg Society of Sciences, founded in 1700 by Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz. As one of the oldest scientific academies in Europe, it promotes interdisciplinary scientific exchange and brings together renowned researchers from both domestic and overseas.

The award honors not only an internationally outstanding scientist but also an important impulse generator for the AI location Bavaria. As chair of the Bavarian AI Council, Fabian Theis brings scientific excellence, technological innovation, and strategic perspectives together for the further development of artificial intelligence in the Free State.
