The solution: Precise real-time analysis through AI
This is where the innovation of "GIPScycle" begins. The research team developed a system that uses modern sensor technology and artificial intelligence to analyze gypsum waste directly in the process.
Advantages for Industry and Environment
The web application developed in the project allows companies to analyze data directly on site. The benefits for practice are significant:
Fast process control: The material composition is immediately recognized. This allows production processes to be adjusted immediately or unsuitable batches to be excluded.
Quality assurance: The process ensures consistently high quality of the recycled end product and reduces waste.
Data sovereignty: The application can be operated on company-owned servers, ensuring full control over sensitive production data.
An important step for the circular economy in the construction sector: The Institute for Digital Engineering (IDEE) of the Technical University of Applied Sciences Würzburg-Schweinfurt (THWS) has the research project "GIPScycle" successfully completed. As part of the Bavarian project network "ForCYCLE Technikum," an AI-supported process was developed that significantly improves the analysis and recycling of gypsum-containing construction waste. At the closing event in Nuremberg, the Bavarian Environment Minister Thorsten Glauber also acknowledged the results.
The challenge: Contaminants in gypsum waste
Gypsum boards are a valuable raw material, but waste from the demolition of buildings often contains contaminants such as silicone compounds (siloxanes) or even health-threatening asbestos. These impurities hinder high-quality recycling and necessitate a labor-intensive manual inspection.
Bavarian innovation for more sustainability
The project "GIPScycle," which was funded by the Bavarian State Ministry for the Environment and Consumer Protection with over 700,000 euros, makes an important contribution to resource conservation. Through close collaboration with industry partners like the Knauf Gips KG and research institutions like the Center for Applied Energy Research e. V. (CAE) The practicality of the technology was ensured. The project impressively shows how AI from Bavaria helps the industry to operate more sustainably and efficiently.
