Innovation in additive manufacturing
The FIT AG, a leading specialist in additive manufacturing (3D printing) based in Lupburg in the Upper Palatinate, set the goal of optimizing their production efficiency and improving quality assurance at the same time. As a pioneer in industrial 3D printing with a focus on metal parts for demanding industries such as aerospace, automotive, and medical technology, the company had to adhere to the highest precision standards.
AI for automated quality control
Together with TH Ingolstadt and supported by the KI-Transfer-Plus program, FIT developed an innovative AI system for automated quality control of 3D-printed metal components. The process started with the systematic collection of production data and the creation of an extensive image database of components. Using computer vision and machine learning algorithms, a system was trained to automatically detect surface defects.
Efficiency boost after 18 months of development time
After 18 months of development time, FIT successfully implemented the system into their production process. The AI-supported quality control now allows a reduction of manual inspection times by up to 75% while increasing error detection. This not only improves cost efficiency but also strengthens the company's market position as a quality leader in additive manufacturing - a prime example of successful AI utilization for optimizing industrial manufacturing processes in Bavarian medium-sized businesses.
